COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
The Spinoff
BBC
ABC News
CNN

We analyzed how competitors display latest videos strategically to retain user engagement and even suggest related content for their onward journey. Our initial video playlist launch was a first slice for this future innovation and concept. We tested how much metadata and informational content users need and enjoy in context with the visual nature of a video playlist experience. Based on our UXR findings, we opted for minimal metadata, visual impact and simple navigation.
IDEATIONS
VIDEO PLAYLIST
We designed a dynamic playlist on the 1News homepage enabling users to watch automated latest videos and choose content in a thumbnail format. This feature added to the spirit of interactivity on the website, as seen in social videos for the homepage and in-article image galleries. The videos rotate and play automatically to feature the latest top stories.

We explored how the thumbnails could animate and how users can interact with these thumbnails on the video playlist. We experimented with thumbnails below the video hero currently playing, and other concepts where the thumbnails pop out from a sidebar. Ultimately, these innovations were advanced beyond our product launch and shelved for future improvement across all endpoints.
VIDEO PLAYER
FEATURES

We designed an overlayed pop-up window that opens when users click to watch the videos. This player experience indicates which video is currently playing with a labeled badge and selected background effect. The interaction infuses both Brightcove parameters and custom design features to compromise a harmonious and delightful experience for users.
